Epson EB-1785W - Ultra portable presentation projector with WiFi and Miracast
The Epson EB-1785W is the successor to the popular EB-1776W and offers some new and practical innovations.
Like its predecessor, the Epson EB-1785W is an ultra portable presentation projector, which is particularly suitable for traveling. Thanks to its compact design, it fits into most bags alongside their usual contents. Its surface is similar to an A4 sheet of paper and its height can be compared with a matchbox on its side. It comes in dimensions of 292 x 213 x 44 mm (WxDxH) and a weight of just 1.8 kg. This makes it one of the lightest LCD projectors on the market. Many will perhaps think that there are also lots of smaller projectors on the market, which is correct however they are usually using LEDlight sources which are less than 1/3 of the light output of the Epson EB-1785W.
The Epson 1785W uses the WXGA resolution, which is not only suitable for traditional presentations, it’s also a good standard for the presentation of video content. They will be displayed in HD quality, which is an important criteria for many users.
WLAN & Miracast
Besides the usual connections, the Epson EB-1785W is well equipped when it comes to the topic of wireless. It has WLAN, which allows you to send content to the projector from a computer, smartphone or tablet. For this, you need the Epson iProjection software, which is available for platforms such as Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. Thanks to the NFC interface, which is also new to the EB-1795F, a fast connection is also possible. This of course only applies to smartphones and tablets that also support NFC.
In addition to WLAN, Miracast is also available. Miracast (also known as Screensharing) offers the possibility to send content from a Miracast-enabled smartphone or tablet to the projector in 1080plossless quality.
An interesting new feature for the Epson EB-1795F projector is the possibility to control your presentation with gesture’s. Here, the projected image is slightly reduced with the addition of a kind of touchbar projected on the left or right hand side. Here the presenter can command the presentation to advance to their next slide with a simple hand movement. To use this feature, the projector requires a USB connection to the PC or notebook, in addition to the HDMI or VGAconnection.
Easy to set up
A simple setup is also an appealing feature for the on the go business user. Thanks to its horizontal and vertical keystone correction (vertical +/- 30 degrees and horizontal +/- 20 degrees), this is no problem as it all works automatically. Thanks to the Screen Fit function, the projector adjusts the image size at the push of a button to suit the area in front of it. For example, if an image overshoots the screen, with the simple press of a button the projector can recognise this and shrink the image to suit. In addition, the focus is also now set via buttons on the top of the device rather than a wheel like the older version.
Other features of the Epson EB-1785W include its 3-in-1 USB display, which can be used to transfer images, sound and control data via USB. This is a very useful function when no HDMI or VGA cable is available. The USB port of the projector can also be used to play JPEGs from a USB memory stick which is great for a photo slideshow. It also has a great new split-screen function, meaning two users can simultaneously present their content, one via HDMI and one via VGA.
The 3LCD projector uses the 1280 x 800 pixels of WXGA resolution in 16:10 format. Its light output is at a good level with 3200 lumens and the contrast of 10,000: 1 is equally good. In the Epson EB-1785W review, it was particularly good at displaying pictures.
Here the EB-1785W offers everything you need in a typical business day. An HDMI input and a VGAinput will be the most used connections for a laptop. The HDMI connection is additionally MHL-capable which is great for use with smartphones and tablets. In addition, there is a USB Type A and a USB Type B connection. For older video sources an RCA video connection is available. For the internal 1 Watt loudspeaker a 3,5 mm jack connection is available, not forgetting the WLAN and Miracast interfaces mentioned earlier.
The optics are quite wide-angle and produce a 2m image width at a distance between about 210 and 250 cm.
The Epson Projector comes with a power cord, a VGA cable, a case, and a CD-ROM guide.
The Epson EB1785W is an interesting, portable business projector that offers versatile features. Thanks to the wireless functions, it offers plenty of freedom for placement. All in all, the Epson EB-1785W price / performance is really attractive.
